I know we all take it for granted, but I guess its easy to see how the average person just assumes they are one and the same

They are the same:
Photo 1 - It has a triangular head = copperhead
Photo 2 - It stuck-out it's tongue = copperhead
Photo 3 - Head is up "like a cobra" = copperhead
Photo 4 - All snakes with a pattern = copperhead

Not near water = copperhead. Near water = cottonmouth.

Aren't you forgetting something? Everyone knows how them rattlers and black snakes breed together, might be one of their deadly hybrid offspring!

When they are near the water, I call them Great Whites.
