need some good anti mite stuff

Nick and i discovered about 2 weeks ago, that my sunglow boa girl has mites. Luckily none of the other snakes in my collection has any after i thoroughly checked every single one of them. I've been treating all of them preventively and treated my boa with "Reptile Spray" from Reptile Basics. It doesn't really have the effect i'd like it to have and am hoping somebody can name me a better product.
The mites do die off from this spray but just not as fast as i would want them to.
The boa is kept seperate from the other snakes and i hope to be able to put her back in my snake room soon...

Provent-a-mite This stuff is gold. It works wonders. Its a little expensive but in the end is worth every penny. I had a mite outbreak once and used the reptile basic stuff till i got a can of this stuff and will never go back. You take the animal and water dish outta the enclosure the spray the enclosure with it. Then wait about 5-10 minutes and put the snake and water dish back. The residue will kill the mites on the animal and spraying will kill everything else. The only thing i would say is if you keep any inverts or feeder bug colonies dont use it around them. This stuff is good and will kill them.

awesome, i read the description on the website and it does sound good. That reptile basics stuff works but takes too long and needs way more attention than i expected.. I'll try this stuff..

Someone with a lot of experience that I believe gives good advice uses Sawyers permethrin. They swear by it as inexpensive and effective, however I would not use it directly on the snake.

where do i get that and how/where do i apply it on?

Internet. I would use it like Prevent-A-Mite. PAM can not be used on snakes either. You have to be careful with the stuff. It can cause neurological problems with snakes. That is why I like the Reptile Relief. It can be used directly on the snakes.

since she's eating like a pig she's shedding quiet a lot as well. I'll try something else after she shed the next time. Washing off old spray doesn't really get it all off i believe. In order to put something new on her i don't want to risk any reaction of two different chemical combinations on her.. I'll definitely try something else besides the stuff from Reptile Basics..

Marco, I was able to get two cans of PAM online for my brother last year for $30 shipped. Let me know when you are ready and I'll come give you a hand. With your setup, it will be real easy to treat all just as a precaution. When we did my brothers, I would soak the snake and kill what was on it while he sprayed the enclosure down and let it air out. I'm not familar with how permethrin works, but the PAM should prevent any loose mites from successfully venturing into an uninfected snakes cage.

With PAM you don't even need to treat the snake at all. If you treat the tub as directed you will not see any mites within a few days. Plus PAM stays in the tub even when you scrub the tubs. This ensures that any eggs that hatch 3 weeks down the roads will also be killed. Like Nick said if you have mites on one snake you should probably treat them all.

Yup, my bro had to go through at least three additional treatments before he took my advice of treating all at the same time. After treating them 100% in one pass, he never had a problem again. They are very sneaky little buggers and it can be very labor intensive if not done right the first time.

I would definitely treat every single snake in your collection. By the time you noticed one snake with mites, it's likely they have gotten to other snakes as well. Besides, it would sure suck to have to go through the treatment process a few times because you didn't eradicate every single mite. It only takes one pregnant female to start a mite infestation...

I've also heard PAM is the best treatment option; best of luck.

Thanks Alex, i'm definitely aware of the spread and will have all weekend to handle the first and main treatment. I just didn't know how to handle it and what to use since i never had mites on my snakes before.

I bought some colubrids from a pretty well known pet store in VB and ever since then my boa had some on her. I did treat most of the snakes, but just don't trust the stuff i got from Reptile Basics.

DO I HAVE TO BATHE MY SNAKES TO WASH OFF THE STUFF I USED BEFORE TO MAKE SURE THE NEW STUFF DOESN'T CUASE ANY CHEMICAL REACTION WITH THE OLD STUFF ON THEM?

i very much appreciate the offer and would have taken you up on it, but since Nick lives around the corner i'll take him up on his offer to help me out. I'm glad to have him so close since he already has experience with these bugs..

i would treat the cage with pam and snake with reptile spray then your covered for both:)

If you choose not to treat the cages and just treat the snakes with the spray from Reptile Basics you are in for a long battle. Eggs are laid in the cage somewhere and not on the snake. In a few weeks when eggs hatch you will be starting all over again.

I treated everything. I cleaned my entire collection with an alcohol/vinegar solution, rinsed it wiit clean water and sprayed the cages. After that i put paper towels in and sprayed the paper towels as well but didn't soak them just sprinkled them.
After the cages were treated i treated every snake i have. What was left in the bottle went onto the racks.
I think what i did was as good as it gets and now i'll order some other stuff in case the mites show up again. Until this day, after my cleaning and treating frenzy i have not seen any mites in my collection and check on them daily.
So far it looks good but i sure will be prepared. I never had mites before and this was a lesson. I'm sure y'all have had this first time experience before and so far i think i got lucky that it didn't come to a complete outbreak...
