Hi,
When the worms turn into beetles are the beetles an acceptable food source for lizards?

As far as I know, no. I usually throw dead beetles outside for wildlife to take care of.

As long as whatever you are feeding will accept them then yes. Superworm beetles should obviously not be tried with small, dainty species that would not even be able eat an adult superworm. For larger insectivorus lizards however like tokay geckos, small monitors, adult bearded dragons, etc beetles can be a great part of a varied diet. As with any single food item however you do not want feed them exclusively. Another option is to place them into a separate container and breed your own superworms. What species are you feeding?

Just read that the beetles have a odorous defense that they give off when threatened.

Throw a beetle in. If the monitor eats it then you have another menu option to add to what should be a varied diet. If the monitor refuses it or spits it out then do not offer them again to that particular species. I have fed superworm beetles many times to leopard geckos and bearded dragons with no ill effects. Again, variety is the key. Do not worry so much about one particular prey item.
