I run into them pretty often as well and have always been curious. I finally was able to get a decent picture of them yesterday.

The first one is a marbled orb weaver the second maybe a spiny orb weaver of some sort. The only spiders in the area that are really dangerous to humans are black widows or brown recluse. Gentlemen you are safe from these ladies they mean you no harm :]

The second spider is an Arrowhead Orbweaver (Verrucosa arenata).

The brown recluse is primarily a Midwest species. The edge of its range just reaches the extreme western tip of Virginia. Even in this area the spider is considered rare.

I suspect that you're misidentifying the spiders. This range map shows the known range of the brown recluse (in red) in the U.S.

PostSubject: Re: Spider IDs??    Spider IDs?? EmptyFri Oct 10, 2014 1:07 am

I would feel relieved if they would really be somewhere else instead of here, but two of my friends were bitten by a brown recluse and one of them almost lost a leg and the other one almost lost an arm. The doctors diagnostics were that these bites came from a recluse..
As I said, I'd be very happy if I did misidentified the ones I saw, but my buddies here in Norfolk have some pretty ugly looking scars..
