Chlorohexidine $13/gallon shipped

Found 1 gallon jugs of 2% chlorohexidine on Amazon.com for about $13 shipped. This is significantly cheaper than I've found anywhere else (including for the 16 oz bottles) so I thought I'd pass it on. Now I just have to figure out what to do with so much... I think it'll last me years!

Yep yep. It's practically alcohol except its less "toxic" and slower acting but it does last, chemically, for about 5 or 6 hours. And it's sensitive enough to use on newborns.

Can you tell if it's the Gluconate?

It seems weird that they don't say and even turn the label to a weird angle so you can't see.

It is. If you zoom in to the active ingredients on the label it says chlorhexidine gluconate.

I gotcha. I know there is a more abrasive type and just wanted to make sure it wasn't that type.

It's actually the exact same (as far as I can tell) as the 16oz bottle RBI sells except it's gallon size. It's called Priority Care 1. At least, this is what I received which looks like a different manufacturer than the picture on amazon.

No problem! They were pretty fast with the shipping. I think it only took 4 days and that's right in the middle of the Christmas shipping rush.

I purchased the same thing from Amazon.com. I've started going THERE to see if I can find anything before going to the "specialized" places.

They shipped my order yesterday. It seems like I go through more and more of this every week.

I switched over to F10, after reading that Chlorhexidine breaks down very quickly. Although, I haven't had any issues with either one.

Although I have yet to practice it, I was told the shelf life of chlorhexidine can be extended when mixed with distilled water.

I use the same one. Got it for the same price as well.

Mixed with tap water, I don't let it go over a week before replacing. Not sure about the shelf life exactly, but with distilled water I heard 30 days when mixed. I have a gallon now that expires next year and I know I won't use it all so I mix small amounts and waste a lot. I use extra around the house just to wipe normal things down, or if I'm giving my shoes a scrub. I even mixed an appropriate amount to use as mouth wash once but after researching, I found out it may stain teeth and it's effects on fighting tooth decay are debateable.

I didn't know it doesn't last that long after mixing.....well guess I will be making another batch

I'm not really sure of the life, only going by word of mouth. I was looking at a prescription of Peridex and it was mixed and didn't expire for several months so I'm not really sure.

I will try and look into that more once I get another chance

What is this for? Can you use vinegar water or 4 to 1 part water to bleach ratio for cleaning?

I use it for disinfecting my snake enclosures and water bowls. I have heard about people using vinegar and I have used bleach in the past. I think Chlorhexidine is preferred to bleach and vinegar because it's practically odorless and less harmful to the reptile when trace amounts are left behind.

Also, if anyone is in the area and would like to try some, PM me and I'll give you a cup of the concentrate for free. I have a gallon that expires in a year and I won't use half of it by then.

I have talked to a few people and they say that it should last more than a year......have you found any more information regarding it?

I believe it, before it's mixed, but this gallon has an expiration date. I think that's why it was so cheap, it's probably been sitting for a while LOL

Do many people use Natural Chemistry Healthy Habitat? It's more expensive than Chlorohexidine, however. I might make the switch.

never heard of it.......most people that I know use Chlorhexidine. It is much safer than a lot of other cleaning products that can be used

F10, doesn't break down like Chlorhexidine and is used in Veterinarian offices.
