| "Expanded Voluntary Recall of Mazuri® Feed Products Due to Potential Elevated Vitamin D Level
(St. Paul, Minn.) July 13, 2012 – PMI Nutrition International is expanding a voluntary recall to include the additional varieties of the Mazuri® feed products with specific lot codes listed below, due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels. Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death, or otherwise be harmful to animals if fed for extended periods, potentially resulting in lack of interest in eating, weight loss and possible joint stiffness.
The products listed in the attachment with specific lot numbers are being recalled due to analytical test results on additional lots of retained samples that indicate a potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. These products are being added to those from earlier recalls announced on July 3, 2012 and July 6, 2012* which were initiated after receiving a small number of customer complaints which involved animal illness and small bird mortality.
The products were manufactured at the Richmond, IN feed plant and were distributed nationwide and to a few international customers starting April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012. Dealers have been contacted and asked to hold these products and to notify and retrieve the product from customers. The affected product should not be used, and where applicable, be returned to the retail dealer."
Check out their face book for exact lots. For Mazuri, it is product dated April 2 - May 8th.

| The last number is just a series of run number or something similar. My feed store called me to ask about the numbers, so they are aware. That is a bad bag. | |

| I can understand. However, the feed has too much vitamin D and will cause some real issues with your rats. I'd jump on it. If you were closer, I'd loan you a bag. You might even want to call Mazuri and see if they will throw in an extra bag for the hassle. | |

| They've been eating all the babies instead of the food. That's why it's been stretching out so far. | |

| I just completed a very disappointing call to Mazuri. I've never seen such a trusted company not care about what they have done with their product. They were only concerned about me returning the rodent feed for a replacement. Did not seem to care about the animals I lost, did not care about the bag I have already used, all they seem to want is the "evidence."
After mentioning that I feed these rodents to high dollar snakes and I was concerned about the long term effects, they did say they would have a nutritionist call me back.
Maybe I'm too far out of the loop, but what kind of quality control are these people utilizing where it takes numerous complaints of sick and dead animals before they look into the problem. Do they not check lots before they send/sell them?? Luckily, I have only sold rodents to one person since then, but it's rather embarrasing taking on the fault that should belong to Mazuri. Is there no recourse for this kind of thing? Hopefully, someone with the capability can sue their pants off. I think I'll be trying Kent from here on out.

| Sorry to hear that Nick. I think I'll look around for a different food as well. The Mazuri was costing my $27 a bag and I buy it 200 lbs at a time. I'm having a hard time finding anything in this area. I even had to drive down to Petersburg to get the Mazuri.

| Nick the same feed store now carries Kent and I think it's $15-16 a bag. If you try it let me know how your rats like it. Also let me know it there is a huge difference in smell. | |

| Wow Nick that is a crappy outcome and poor customer service. Hopefully you can call find a good replacement product for your rodents.
If we ever look back into doing our own rats I will keep this all in mind.

Please keep us posted on what the nutritionist says or if you ever do get a call back. I just called also since I figure the more calls about it, the more they'll start to realize it could be a serious problem since it sounds like they didn't really care. Unfortunately, no one answered this extension, or the general customer service extension. Either they're flooded with irate customers or they just don't care and aren't answering. This is the number I called: Customers should return remaining products to their retailer to receive a refund. For more information on the product recall, contact your local dealer or Customer Service (1-855-863-0421, x 224) between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (EDT), Monday through Friday.

| I have to give a million praises to Farmer's Feed and Seed in Suffolk. Mazuri could take some lessons from them in customer service.
Not only were they truly concerned about my rodents, but they had the rep on the phone, took my info, replaced the bags without question and even made up for the compromised food I have already fed (something Mazuri wanted no part of). He insured his rep would contact a nutritionist in case the person I spoke to drops the ball.

| Good deal. Sounds kind of like the feed store I purchased from. They called me to tell me there was a recall and ask if they could replace the bags. I'm still leery of Mazuri, but haven't found a good alternative yet. I know some breeders feed hog feed, but I've always fed what I thought was quality rat food.
The funny thing is, this was my first time using Mazuri. I fed Harlan until they started charging shipping for web orders.

Farmer's Feed and Seed have been nothing but great to me in the year or so I have been dealing with them. They just have that small town mom and pop shop feel and actually appreciate there customers. You can't get that kind of service in a big box store because in that setting you don't matter in the big picture.

| Ok, so I spoke to a rep who had the reports from the nutritionist working my "case." To sum it up, one nutritionist said the levels should drop to a normal level in 2 days with fasting and substituting with vit D-free veggies and fruits. The other nutritionist said it has shown to take three weeks with cattle. The toxic levels in the rodents should not harm the snakes because the ratio to the body weight couldn't create a high enough level? Something like that with larger words I knocked PMI's customer service a few posts up but that was due to my ignorance. The person who I spoke to was just a customer service rep who was just taking details on the "case." The rep I spoke to was great and helped me through everything and understanding what was going on. I didn't get to talk to the nutritionists, but their reports where specific to my situation. All in all, I'll probably stick with Mazuri. Their sensitivity and timeliness amazed me (I just spoke to her today but we played phone tag since Thursday, so they were quick). Of course, this could just be damage control for a potential backlash, but I guess it better than no control. Hopefully they will tighten up on the quality control in the future. | |
