ASF's

Does anyone know what the going price of ASF's are? Are they more expensive in the pet stores? I know that some of you fine folks raise your own but I was just wondering.

We were informed today it is illegal for pet stores to sell them??? or maybe Miles heard wrong? but we need one too lol. just one...

About $2 to $3 each is the going rate. Some people charge more some less.

just going by what I remember..... It is or was illegal for pet stores to sell them. Thats why you dont see zebra mice and othe small mamals from there any more. I dont remember why. But back a few year we got something in the mail from animal control/fish and game don't remember who but it said to stop selling them. And all the supplier at the time stop selling them.

Virginia has a law against selling African mammals as pets. Now, I think you can get a special permit to sell them as feeders but apparantly you are only allowed to sell the males. At least this is what I've heard. But I do know a few people here in Richmond that breed ASF rats. I'll have to ask them about it.

I went out to the Administrative Code of Virginia and looked this up. Under "4VAC15-30-40. Importation requirements, possession and sale of nonnative (exotic) animals." It is illegal to possess, import or sell without a permit "rodentia" native to Africa. I think this includes ASF's.

I wonder how difficult it is to get a permit?

Like the turtle law the only time I've seen this enforced is as a secondary offense when they are responding to another report.

My asfs finally started reproducing after 3 months. This week I had four females produce 70 live pinkies

After learning that ASFs may not be legal (but not enforced), I'd caution members about postings related to possession of ASFs on a public forum. Our government is not known for minding their own business. And, the enforcement may change in the future.
