Upcoming VA Turtle Publication

The VADGIF has an excellent new booklet in the works. "A Guide to the Turtles of Virginia" is 44 pages with over 100 photos and illustrations covering the ecology and conservation of Virginia's 24 turtle species and subspecies. This booklet is scheduled for release in early September.

What is the turtle pictured?

The turtle pictured is a yearling Bog Turtle. They are a Federal Threatened, State Endangered species.

Unfortunately, there were some printing issues with the booklet and its release has been pushed back.

One of the smallest semi aquatic turtles in the US. They max out in the 4 inch range. Their small size made them popular among hobbyists. Due to habitat destruction and over collection they are also one of the rarest in our state.
