PostSubject: Chuck Hurd   Chuck Hurd EmptySun Jan 06, 2013 3:36 am

My name is Samuel Charles Hurd, but commonly known as Chuck. I was born in Lebanon, VA. My fathers side of the family were farmers and we have a Family farm half way between Nicklesville, VA and Castlewood, VA. My mothers side were coal miners from the mountains of Dickinson County, VA. I moved to Gate City in 1985 and lived there until I moved to Chattanooga, TN for college in 1994.

I am a life long reptile enthusiast. It began as a small child collecting snake and turtles from the family form, or from the river that ran behind my grand mother's house in the small mining village of McClure, VA. As a child I faced many punishments for bringing home snakes. Sometime around the age of 7 I discovered a Timber Rattlesnake on the farm. From that point on I had a fascination with venomous reptiles.

I received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and made my residence in Chattanooga for 16 years. I moved back to VA in December of 2010.

I maintain a moderate collection of reptiles. Mostly VA native snakes and turtles, and a few specimens of exotic venomous snakes. I hold a VA Wild Animal Display permit. I enjoy doing reptile displays and lectures. We call our small business, Chuck Hurd Serpentology.

In September of 2011, a fellow reptile enthusiast by the name of Silvia came to VA from France to study with me. After spending some time together, we decided to get married. She is now a full partner in CHS. She has a passion for cobras, that exceeds my own, as I much prefer the Timber Rattlesnake.

We would like to make contact with any other keepers in the Southwest VA area. We are actively involved in the Tri-Cities Herpetology Society, which services most of Southwest VA. Anyone interested in a local reptile club can find us at

Thanks everyone, Silvia and I are happy to be a part of your group.

Larry, I see that you are actively involved with the VHS. We were hoping to be active with them as well. I best I can tell, you have no or at least very little presents n Southwest VA....let us know how we can help change that.

Actually Chuck, we are probably going to be headed down that way this year. Perhaps you can be of service. Stay tuned. We may be planning a combined trip with the Tennessee Herp society. We have done surveys down that way in the past and two years ago we did a hellbender survey...just stay tuned. Smile
