My new rodent system! Empty
PostSubject: My new rodent system!   My new rodent system! EmptyTue Oct 09, 2012 9:38 pm

I'm really excited because I just ordered a new rodent system. It will be much easier to clean than the lab cages that I'm currently using. It is pricey, but getting the right tools is important. I've also ordered some more racks for the ball pythons. Here is the rack for rodents:

Very, very nice Don! How do you keep your rats? In your snake room or shed/garage?

In a closet around the corner from my snake room. Currently, I have lab cages but need to expand because my collection of snakes is getting larger. This should hold me for awhile especially if I continue to use the lab cages for grow up potential breeder cages.

What ratio can you run? It looks like a 1.2 maybe?

Yup, exactly. 1.2. I also replace two of the rows with grow out tubs. With the large lab cages I've got, I should have extras. I made a big mistake and allowed all of my breeding groups to age out and my production died off. I'm paying about $100 a week in rodents right now. With this system, it will be much easier for me to rotate and plan my breeder rotation. Like I said, the right tools for the job.

My wife does most of the rodent cleaning and I got 10 extra tubs coming, so cleaning should be much easier with this system.

Same thing happened to me this year. A year goes by quick. That and the Mazuri issue and the ratio problem slammed me. Luckily I got it going again before this feeding rush.

Have you tried a 1.2 group before? I never had much luck, but luck has never been on my side with rats Facepalm

I have been using a freedom breeder for a long time (since 05) and I can say one thing bad about it. Watch the waterers. They suck if the rodents start digging. I would say it goes in waves that they overflow and if you don't catch it in time the rodents drown. I like the rack, I can get tons of rodents. It's a little bit of work but well worth it.
