So does any one here who breeds rats have experience using WOODY PET? I plan on building 2 rat racks this weekend to start breeding rats and am looking at substrate choices. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info as far as if its safe to use for feeder rats that are going to be snake food. Granted there are other options but WOODY PET seems to be the cheapest, and was wondering if any one used it and how they liked it compared to aspen.

I used pine for years with great results and I've found nothing that can compare to the smell reduction. The pine let's the feces fall deeper in the substrate which I believe reduces the smell. I have experienced difficulty with baby rats being buried and "lost" and dusty pine will clog the nostrils of young making it difficult to nurse.

Now I use aspen which requires frequent changes because the feces doesn't settle and sits on top, however, the babies never get lost and the substrate becomes compact. It is a little pricier but I can get it pretty cheap Smile

Thanks Guys

Im thinking ill go with a bottom layer or kiln dried pine with a small layer of aspen to try and keep the babies from sinking

Is Woody Pet the pelleted bedding? If so, that stuff gets dusty fast. It really helps with absorbing urine and odor. On that aspect, it gets an A but I did lose babies that got the dust in their nostrils. When I breed rodents again, I plan on using low dust aspen.

Something along the lines of carefresh bedding works best in my opinion. There is no dust at all and the female rats usually prefer using it to make a nest. It also absorbs smell pretty very well. I know there are cheaper brands of it but can't think of them off the top of my head.

Carefresh can actually be quite dusty, especially when you are using it for many animals. I used to work in a Petsmart. We used carefresh for many of our small animal habitats and Carefresh was by far the dustiest bedding we used.

I found the carefresh to be real dusty and didnt help with the smell and that was only with 2 rats.

A good combo to use with breeding rodents is to use a very thin layer of the pelleted bedding with a layer of aspen (or other loose bedding on top) The wood pellets will help with the smell and absorbtion of fluids but not enough of it to make things dusty. And the layer of aspen will give the rodents something soft to lay on and dig in.
